Assistance for pregnant or parenting teens and women

The PPACA appropriates $25 million annually from 2010 through 2019 for grants that states can use to assist pregnant or parenting teens and women. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services anticipates awarding up to 25 grants of between $500,000 and $2 million per year. States may use grant money to support pregnancy and parenting services in higher education institutions, high schools or community centers. The money can also fund state Attorneys General to help provide services for pregnant women who are victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, sexual assault or stalking. States may also use the grant money for public awareness campaigns about pregnancy and parenting services.

Arkansas Implementation

The Arkansas Department of Health did not apply for this grant. The main reason for not applying is that the grant required the state to spend matching funds, and the agency does not have state funds budgeted for this purpose.

The Health Department did, however, support the grant application of the Arkansas Children's Trust Fund, a statutorily created fund to support child abuse prevention efforts. The Trust Fund's grant application is provided below.

In September 2010, the Arkansas Children's Trust Fund was awarded $1,122,760 in grant funding.
